Richard Boober

Richard Boober has been an active member at First Unitarian Church of Providence since 1996. Currently, he is a member of the History and Nominating Committees and Art in the Atrium First U. And, Richard has traveled to Transylvania as a member of First U’s Transylvania Partner Church program.

Ambiguity is his favorite word, and his photography is an expression of how he sees the world in unique ways. Richard thinks our Meeting House dedicated in 1816 is unique. The building has a great history and design. For this exhibition, Richard chose to print all the images on metal instead of paper because of the vibrancy.

Richard has been photographing since the late 1960’s. He began photographing in film. Today he uses digital camera gear for capturing images and processing. He particularly likes long-exposure shots of nature, buildings, and interesting objects.

Margaret Rizzuto

Margaret Rizzuto is a new member of First Unitarian Church of Providence and a leader in Art in the Atrium First U. She has well over15 years as a Portrait Photographer in New York where she was always seeking to look past the outward appearance of the person, trying to capture what was underneath - the essence, the truth, the vulnerability. She does that now in her photography too but instead of people - it’s objects, shadows, patterns, and flowers.

Trying to get underneath (sometimes literally) to understand and uncover what might not at first glance be seen. To look deeper and see things in a different way. For Margaret, photography is her touchstone, its inherent meditative qualities provide her with a quiet space. It helps her notice and see things she feels she might otherwise pass by, it gives her a reason to stop - and breathe.

While capturing the images for this show, Sacred Space, she had many moments of pause as she stood in the beautiful, empty space of the First Unitarian Church of Providence. One day, she sat in one of the pews and thought about the many, many years it’s been in existence, its rich history, all the people that have passed through the doors, songs that were sung and messages delivered. She felt humbled.

Margaret hopes that you see something in her work that gives you pause, a chance to stop in the midst of our ever-changing, ever-busy world. She invites you to breathe, to stop and take that extra-long breath.
